Welcome to Thinknology

Welcome to Thinknology, the Blog of Think60. Think60 is dedicated to creating an online student-centered, learning environment for adult learners in adult basic education programs. Computer Literacy is critical in today’s technology-driven world. The fact is that adult learners must be computer literate if they are to succeed at work, in basic communication, and in day-to-day activities and interactions.

Technology is a key component of literacy. An online learning environment has the potential to reach students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to take advantage of a traditional ABE, ESL, and literacy programs. Technology provides a safe, secure, comfortable learning environment. Students work at their own pace without the pressure of a live classroom.  Technology allows adult students higher levels of concentration and active learning because they are in control.

Curriculum developers must take a leadership role in integrating technology into the curriculum. To do this, they need to develop quality content and deliver it in a way that takes advantage of all the opportunities that technology has to offer.

Too often teachers are asked to develop their own curriculum using free or open source content, or just plug their own material into a content management system. On one hand, this makes sense since teachers are the experts, assessing their students’ needs and tailoring content to meet these needs. On the other hand, this is like asking teachers to write and publish their own instructional materials.

Yes, there is a lot of free content available online but the quality varies widely and the teacher must visit many sites to piece together a workable curriculum. Furthermore, there is a lack of quality content specifically written for adult learners; most of it is written for kids.

So, a content management system seems like simple solution at first glance, but, in reality, it is very time consuming to learn, write, input and assign effective lessons to meet the needs of a diverse population. Putting more demands on already over-burdened teachers is not the answer.

Think60 has the means to develop quality content and deliver it through a user-friendly platform. Through this blog and other online community building resources, Think60 is collaborating with teachers and programs. Listening to their needs, their concerns, their struggles and proposing and developing solutions to address their issues.

These tools are invaluable to adult educators. They offer expansion, outreach, motivation, and focus and…most of all…results. Adults who have not been able to function in today’s world because of their lack of basic skills will be given the gift of literacy by today’s definition.

We hope you will join the discussion, share your ideas and experiences, and find this blog a useful tool that will expand your classroom.
